Did a Nuclear War End Atlantis? (I)

Introduction

We believe to have found solid, physical evidence — of the type popularly called “smoking gun” — that Atlantis indeed met its end at an all-out Nuclear War. This is more or less what Plato asserts in his dialogues on Atlantis and its demise. And this tradition is confirmed by the very detailed ones of the Hindus and other nations, as we argue further below. The physical evidence we found is of two natures: one based on radioactive anomalies and the other on a very puzzling artifact of nature called tektites by the specialists.

Both of these anomalies are so far unexplained, and both find a very natural explanation in an all-out nuclear war occurring in Atlantis, at about the date of its demise, of 11,600 years ago. The coincidence of the dates of the unique physical anomalies just mentioned with that of the destruction of Atlantis is remarkable enough. Couple that with the traditions of nuclear war in Atlantis and with the fact that these mysteries have no alternative explanation and no apparent cause, and the alternative becomes compelling.

Originally, we did not accept the hypothesis of a nuclear war in Atlantis, despite the fact that it was postulated by many researchers, who mainly based themselves on traditional accounts such as the ones just mentioned. As professional scientists we are obliged to assume the simplest hypothesis able to account for the known facts, applying Ockam’s Razor to all other superincumbent hypotheses such as say, godly astronauts, fanciful weapons, or parapsychic powers. So, we did not believe that it was the War of Atlantis that led to its destruction, thinking that it was the other way around and that it was the cataclysm that forced the Atlanteans out of their homeland, into that of their neighbors who, of course, resisted the invasion.

However, it now seems that the opposite was the case and that it was indeed an all-out Nuclear War that caused the cataclysm that culminated with the cataclysmic end of the Pleistocene. No, we are not joking or exaggerating, or lying. For no amount of money or fame would we ever desecrate the holy traditions of our forefathers in an attempt to create sensationalism?

However, the curious reader may inquire how we came to change our views on the matter so radically switching from a natural catastrophe triggered by a volcanic explosion of colossal proportions to one caused by man’s recklessness. The answer is obvious in hindsight.

A Single A-Bomb May Suffice to Destroy the World

At first, I refused to believe that humans could be so foolish as to try to bring about the end of their own species by sheer wantonness. However, as a nuclear scientist, I feel morally obliged to warn the whole world of a real threat that is certainly realized by the scientific and military communities but is never told explicitly to the public at large.

The sad reality is that a single A-Bomb, a tiny artifact of the size of the ones dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki fully suffice to cause a tragedy, a global proportions. All that has to be done is to deliver it directly on top of a nuclear power plant of average proportions. Such an event would release the contained radioisotopes to the atmosphere and the stratosphere and we would all or most die perhaps the ugliest way one can imagine. ^[1]

But what does this have to do with volcanic cataclysms? I was just giving an instance where Nuclear War, even with a very minor nuclear power such as Israel, India or Pakistan may indeed lead to absolute doom. Of course, the imaginative military may come up with better alternatives yet. One such would be to drop an A-or H-bomb directly on top of a huge volcano. A submarine volcano would probably be best, but a terrestrial one should also do fairly well. The contained magma, held within it magma chamber by the enormous pressure of the superincumbent rock would be suddenly released in a colossal explosion.

In the sea, such an explosion would also result in a major tsunami, whose terrible consequences are known to all who viewed Steven Spielberg’s Deep Impact! A semi-submarine like Thera’s or, better yet, the Krakatoa, would be even better, for it would combine the effects of Fire and water both: the fire of the released magma and the water of the tsunami caused by the explosion.

Very probably, it was indeed the cause of the end of Atlantis, a nuclear device was emplaced by a submarine or dropped from a plane (a vimana?), argue elsewhere on this site and in our book on Atlantis, the results probably exceeded by far the most delirious expectations of the attackers, and the result was the end of the world or, at least of Age of Atlantis.

As we argue elsewhere, the end of Atlantis coincided with the end of the Pleistocene to such a high precision that cannot reasonably be ascribed to chance. Both events took place at about 9,600 BC, the very date preconized by Plato. I pointed out that fact several years ago, and it is fast becoming commonplace as people rip me off without due credit or rediscover it independently, the way I did: via thorough research of the ample scientific literature on the matter. But the fact remains that I was first in establishing the connection between the Atlantean cataclysm, the Flood, and the catastrophic end of the Pleistocene.

No, I am not complaining. Just setting the record straight. Actually, I am glad to see that several facts that I discovered many years ago and attempted to publish either in scientific journals or in non peer reviewed magazines that are fast becoming commonplace and scientifically acceptable. In time they will become reputable science, as will other “lunatic fringe” tenets which I first proposed in connection with Atlantis.

There is at least a practical advantage to the fact that my theories are becoming somewhat reputable and accepted by many. They are elaborated by others, so that all I have to do is to refer the dear reader to them, devoting my time to what I love best of all: to research Atlantean matters. To that end, I compiled a short list of Homepages and Internet articles at the end of this page, to which the reader may refer conveniently and at ease when he finishes reading the present essay. Departing from these, he can find a lot of further links and references.

We suggest that he accepts our present thesis as a working hypothesis, and read this paper to the end, before starting to surf to the other pages for details and independent confirmation. This way, he will be able to form an opinion on his own based on my thesis and my defense before reading those of other authors. For, in my humble opinion, though the facts that they present are adamant, their theories and their interpretations of the mechanism are utterly wrong. Scientific theories should be selected for adoption or two basic criteria:

1. They must be the simplest and most conservative of all known alternatives (Ockam’s Razor).
2. They should best fit all the extant data, leaving out the least possible number of anomalous shreds of evidence.

 

Other than that, scientific theories, like all others, are free creations of the human mind, as Einstein put it so well. Admit, for the time being, the reality of Atlantis, at least as a working hypothesis, to be accepted or rejected in face of the vast amount of evidence that we have gathered not only elsewhere in this site but on our 20 years of research on the subject. Consider also that Atlantis was at least as far advanced as our own civilization, whose industrialization dates from about 200 years ago when James Watt invented the steam engine.

After all, Man has been about for something like 3 million years, and the prospect of former, developed civilizations is not so absurd after all. Civilizations die out and are utterly forgotten until some lucky archaeological find brings them back to life. This is the rule, rather than the exception in archaeology, and has occurred in several cases.

Atlantis was probably no exception to the rule, particularly if its main sites got submerged by the rising sea level or if the remaining ones are lost in the jungles of Malaysia and Indonesia or in those of Amazonia, say, or buried under the sands of the Sahara or Arabia or the Gobi desert. But now that, hopefully, we will start to look in the right spots, the evidence for Atlantis and for its superior civilization will start piling up from all corners.

One instance of what we are saying is happening just now, with the so-called “Japanese Pyramids”, the mysterious structures recently discovered in Japan and which are fast becoming an international sensation. When we first brought them to the attention of the public in connection with Atlantis and its location in the South China Sea which we advocated, the reaction was amazing disbelief. After all, the few believers in Atlantis may have been indoctrinated by the ego-boosting perspective that it lay in the Atlantic Ocean, and that, in consequence, the West, rather than the East was the true source of Civilization, if not of Humanity itself.

The mysterious structures of Yonagum and other islands of the region of Okinawa may be natural after all. At first, no one realized their possible connection with Atlantis, which I mooted out and argued in detail in the Ancient Wisdom Mailing List and elsewhere. Its Japanese discoverers and researchers never realized this possible connection speaking of dates such as 3,000 or 4,000 BC, the ones usually ascribed to the appearance of civilization in China and Japan.

But West, Bauval, Hancock and Schoch were quick to grasp the importance and the true meaning of the submerged structures in their relation to Atlantis (ref. 3). Note that I am not asserting that they plagiarized my theories or cribbed my arguments on these structures themselves or on other facts that support my pioneer siting of Atlantis in precisely that region of the world.

After all, ideas, once conceived, apparently have some telepathic or electric proper that causes their triggering in other people’s minds. It is true that the Theosophic traditions — which Helena Blavatsky and others actually learned in the Far East — speak of Lemuria and, indeed, of Atlantis as well. But they clearly separate the two great civilizations, which they place at millions of years ago one in the Atlantic Ocean, and the other in the Central Pacific, hence far away in both time and space from my Lemurian Atlantis in the South China Sea and dating only from a scant 11,600 years ago or so.

As is clear, the coincidence is uncanny, for they use exactly the arguments I developed in my many years of research: the right date of 9,600 BC, the South China Sea location, the connection with the catastrophic end of the Pleistocene and the Flood and some others of a more technical character. What is even more interesting is the fact that they concluded that the structures — though fascinating and unique — are quite probably natural, the quaint result of strange geological forces in action. But such is not the opinion of Prof. Kimura and other Japanese researchers that have studied the sites.

My conclusions, unlike those of West and his team’ who studied the structures in loco — are based on my experience (armchair, mainly) is studying similar sites all over the world and even on Mars, the Moon, and the other planets and satellites. As a scholar, I have to apply Ockam’s Razor, and depart from the principle that the Japanese Structures, though fascinating and deserving of further research by all sorts of specialists, are to be held natural until their artificiality is confirmed. We must depart from the simplest possibility if sanity and rationality are to be preserved.

But the Japanese structures open up new vistas for research. And they have the advantage of focusing — for the first time ever, at least in the west — the attention on the Far East as the possible site of Atlantis. Moreover, it brings to everybody’s attention the reality of the cataclysm of the Universal Flood and of the global mass extinctions that occurred at precisely the date preconized by Plato, that of 9,600 BC (Ref. 1).

Well, that should suffice for now in what concerns the possibility that Atlantis indeed existed and was as advanced as unusually admitted in the ancient traditions both of the East and the West. Departing from that hypothesis as a datum, it is only natural to inquire on what were the actual causes of its sudden and absolute disappearance from the scenery some 9,600 BC years ago.

OK, we know that it was the Flood and, better yet, the catastrophic end of the Pleistocene Ice Age. But what indeed triggered that awful event? The truth is that no one knows. There are a few dozen hypotheses and theories attempting to explain the catastrophe, but no one has indeed been fully accepted by the academic community.

The favorite is the so-called Milankovitch Theory. But it has many opponents, and several data points to its utter failure. New hypotheses appear daily, now that the global extent of the cataclysm and its utter violence are starting to be fully realized by all, at least within the academic quadres. A very recent one, of which I heard the other day, claims that the mass extinctions such as the P/H (Pleistocene/ Holocene) boundary are the result of the passage of neutron beams generated by Black Holes when they gulp down stars of galaxies.

Earlier versions spoke of the passage of miniature black holes through the earth, like a sort of giant cannonball. Others, more conservative and more realistic, speak of asteroidal or cometary falls. This possibility is unfortunately very real and indeed rather frequent by geological standards. This reality is clearly visible in the face of the Moon, and indeed of all planets and satellites. Except that on the earth erosion quickly effaces the evidence, except in a few specific spots well-known to the specialists.

Was the Krakatoa Explosion that Destroyed Atlantis Foreseen or Not?

We have earlier preconized the Krakatoa explosion of 11.6 kya (kiloyears ago) as the cause of the demise of Atlantis because it is the event affirmed by tradition. But we have been slow to grasp the possibility that this explosion may have been triggered on purpose by a nuclear weapon or perhaps even by some sort of accident such as the explosion of a nuclear reactor in the times of Atlantis. Someone underestimated the consequences, and bang! went the world. I sure hope that the same sort of mistake does not happen again if it indeed did in Atlantis.

The hypothesis of a nuclear accident is unlikely. But the one of a nuclear explosion triggering the one of the Krakatoa and that, in turn, causing the drastic end of the Pleistocene is not. It is affirmed by Plato and by a great many traditions from all over the world. Perhaps the enemy just dropped an atomic device over the capital of Atlantis — a prime target by any standards — without fully realizing the fact that it lay over the Krakatoa vertents and that the explosion could set off the volcano in one of the greatest eruptions ever.

Or perhaps — just perhaps, for the alternative is too horrible to face — they knew indeed what they were doing, but believed that the volcanic explosion would be of little consequence outside the Atlantean continent itself. Another alternative consistent with known facts is that the explosion and the end of the Pleistocene occurred as an indirect result of the nuclear war of Atlantis. What we have in mind is the possibility that the War of Atlantis caused a Nuclear Winter of the type mooted out by Carl Sagan and a team of nuclear scientists working with him.

Always according to this hypothesis, this Nuclear Winter – caused by forest fires and others of a global scale – led first to a chilling of the earth and then, to a sudden warming as the soot of the smoke settled upon the glaciers, and those started to melt due to the increased absorption of sunlight. As the glaciers melted and the meltwaters flowed into the seas, the seafloor became overstressed, and the earth’s crust cracked and quaked in the weak spots in a volcanic paroxysm. One such, perhaps the first to go off, was the Krakatoa, the volcano of Atlantis.

Both the volcanic paroxysm and the temperature swing attending the end of the Pleistocene correspond to empirically observed events. The temperature swing corresponds to the so-called Younger Dryas episode, as shown in Fig. 1.

At first, we observe a gradual rise in temperature possibly due to an increase of atmospheric CO2 contents, perhaps due to increased industrial activity in Atlantis, or even due to the CO2 released by fires set off by the war. As the smoke spread, covering the earth, a Nuclear Winter developed, chilling the earth again. Finally, as the soot settled, it caused the glaciers to melt, and to induce the positive feedback in the volcanism just mentioned.

The process kept feeding upon itself, until a new stable state – that of the present era, was finally obtained, and the warming trend ceased. Of course, the rise in sea level was far from a Uniformitarian process, as the Darwinists naively believe. The rise in sea level and the volcanic paroxysms occurred in spurts, in the so-called Heinrich Events, very possibly caused by giant tsunamis or other such cataclysms.

Smoking Gun Evidence of Nuclear War in Atlantis

We believe, as we said above, that we have found “smoking gun” evidence that the Atlantean demise and, hence, the end of the Pleistocene Ice Age was caused by the sort of events we are discussing. And this concrete evidence —if it indeed proves to be a reality rather than perhaps an artifact of nature of the kind of the Japanese Pyramids — is not only sobering; it is a clear warning from the remote past that we must, above all things and all consideration rule out definitively and from all nations all sorts of nuclear weapons.

I say that as a nuclear scientist that knows that, as long as a single nation has them, then whole world is in jeopardy, and the other nations will all rush to develop them, as they all have been doing. But, enough breast-beating for I am a scientist and not at all a preacher. To be sincere, I deeply hope that I am wrong and that my suspicions and my arguments prove to be wrong through more solid research and better data than I have been able to collect. However, I sort of tend to disbelieve coincidences.

I have found recently two “coincidences” that can both be deemed “smoking gun” evidence for Atlantis as a high civilization of the ante-diluvian past, among the many others that we had produced earlier. Both the Japanese Structures and the Nuclear Warfare are uncannily improbable as mere artifacts of Nature. One such coincidence is hard to accept. Two borders the irrational. But even if so, we will pursue our quest for a Far Eastern Atlantis, for whose reality we have a lot of further compelling evidence.

Before we engage in our explanation of the physical anomaly presented by c¹⁴ and its possible connection with the Atlantean War let us briefly review the corroborating evidence that we have on these seemingly fantastic proposals of ours. Consider first, the War of Atlantis. Plato does not affirm actually what caused the cataclysm, except to say that it was an earthquake ordered by the gods. But the Greeks classified volcanic eruptions of an explosive nature as a particular type of earthquake (seismon) which they named Khasmata (“gape openers”).

This is due to the fact that such violent eruptions are indeed attended by dreary earthquakes. And, when they occur, they void the magma chamber of the volcano all of a sudden, so that the volcanic peak collapses into a crater that may be up to a hundred kilometers and even more in diameter. Hence the name of Khasma or Khasmata, is descriptive of the huge gaping crater that results, and which they equated to the breaking loose of Hell itself.

So, the “earthquake” that Plato mentions — and which indeed caused the gigantic tsunami that is called “Flood” in the ancient traditions was indeed caused by the giant explosion of the Holy Mountain related by many of them in connection with Atlantis itself and the Far East. The Far East — and particularly the so-called “Fire Belt” that forms the Indonesian Islands, and stretches along Japan, the Kuriles, and the Atlantean Islands — is the region of the world that is the most volcanically active of all. Giant volcanic calderas such as those of the Krakatoa volcano, Toba Lake and Lake Taupo attain 100 km or over in diameter, being the largest known.

But let in return to the War of Atlantis proper. Plato and his commentators (Crantor, etc.) affirm that the War of Atlantis was the one allegorized by mythical Wars such as those of the Gods and the Giants and of the God against the Titans. In one description — that of the combat between Zeus and Typhon made by Hesiod in his Theogony — the happening is told as a cataclysm of global proportions that destroy most if not all of the earth. Hesiod’s description is masterful (Theog. 820 f.). We analyze it in detail elsewhere, and will not repeat that exercise here.

But Zeus’ “thunderbolts” are clearly described as some sort of powerful weapon of tremendous explosive force. Typhon, in turn, is described as some sort of giant volcano. From this giant mouth of the terrible creature issued huge amounts of fire and embers that reached up to the skies. Awful rumbling noises and huge amounts of smoke were also emitted by the monster. The smoke darkened the whole region and the whole earth quaked when the gods struck each other. Rivers of fire (magma?) run over land and sea.

“The whole earth, the sea, the skies, boiled with the fury of the battle. The waves surged impelled by their blows. The great quakes heaved the whole earth, And even Hades below and its king are shaken.

Now, Typhon is the Greek name of the god the Egyptians called Seth. Seth personified the Red Races in Egyptian traditions. And Zeus, in turn, his opponent, personified the paideuma of the White Races which later subdivided into those of the Semites and the Aryans. The Red Races are indeed the Dravidas and other Races descended from them. They are the race that Plato calls Atlanteans in his dialogues. Likewise, the “Greeks” of Plato, their opponents, correspond to the Yavanas of Hindu traditions, the above-mentioned White Races of Atlantis’ twin empire.

So, what Hesiod is reporting in magnificent detail is in fact the war of Atlantis, under the disguised of a myth. As we show elsewhere in detail, the battle of Zeus and Typhon was cribbed by the Greek bard from the far earlier one of the Rig Veda, the battle of Indra and Vritra. As in the Greek poem, Indra personifies the White Races of which he is the champion, just as Vritra — alias Varuna or Poseidon, the founder of Atlantis — alias Varuna or Poseidon, the founder of Atlantis — personifies the Dravidian races which he in turn protects.

In the Rig Veda too, the battle between the two giant creatures also causes the whole earth to quake and rend open in enormous gaps. It also ends with the death of the terrible giant and the victory of Indra. Vritra bursts open, voiding its fiery “blood” (magma) over the earth. The seas boil and froth, and pour over the earth in a global flood.

The above poems tell, under the form of charming myths, what the epic sagas such as the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and dozens of others tell in a far more realistic context. The two opposing sides of these epic wars are man, even though most of them are of godly proportions. In their battles, they use highly advanced machines and devices which, if real or even mere exaggerations are fantastically advanced. Their vimanas (or vahanas = vehicles”) attain kilometric sizes and transport tens of thousands of persons across the whole earth.

Inside they have houses and palaces and even gardens and lakes. But what interests us now is their highly advanced weapons. These are called aguiastras, a word that is usually translated as “firearm” (agni astra). But these are no ordinary guns or even cannons. The smaller ones resemble bazookas and some medium-sized ones may have been rockets equipped with ordinary warheads. But some are compared to “the fire of Doomsday”, the Vadavamukha that actually wiped entire cities and countries out of the map.

In fact, the very name of Agni suggests some sort of nuclear device. For Agni — though representing all forms of Doomsday, just as does the Vadava. Agni also personified the Holy Mountain itself or, rather, the fire within it, the very flames of Hell. Such a mystic meaning is represented, in the Anjali Mudra, the hand sign that reproduces the shape of the Holy Mountain with a huge gap opened in its incline. The name of the Anjali Mudra derives its name from the Sanskrit radix anj, meaning the same thing as “fiery” and composing the name of Agni and Angiras, the archetypal Fallen Angel that became the Vadavamukha, “the Fire of Doomsday”.

The Vadavamukha is the very volcano of Atlantis’ capital city (Lanka), the ferocious Krakatoa. Agni is also often equated with the Fire of Sacrifice. The Sacrifice is Purusha, the Primordial man. And Purusha is no other than the personification of Paradise as represented in the Sacrifice of Holy communion [LINK].

So, we are — when we follow the clues afforded by myths back to the origin — led not only to Hindu traditions but beyond, to the ones of Atlantis-Eden itself. And, what is even more remarkable though far more frightening, is the fact that we are all the time awakened to the reality of the fratricidal war of Atlantis and perhaps, just perhaps, to one of the atomic and nuclear weapons that ended up destroying the whole world or, at the very least, the one of Atlantis itself.

And this gives us a motive why the reality of Atlantis and of the events taking part there in the dawn of times was indeed suppressed and told only in, the form of fiction. This grievous sin is, in all probability the Original Sin. A sin so shameful and so hideous that it had to be hidden and disguised in the form of ritual such as the Holy Sacraments that we perform as apishly, and so blindly as baboons. Are we about to perpetrate this hideous sin all over again? Who knows? Words say no. But the actual facts and events say yes, indeed!

The second story I have to tell belongs to our days, to the present. I know I will not be believed except perhaps by a few who know better than to doubt facts and to believe in lies. I will be blamed for being a racist and ridiculed for being insane. Before I proceed, let me state my position once more. No, I am no racist and I peddle no wares or doctrines whatsoever. I am just a libertarian, an anarchist that deeply believes that all humans are equal, and equally entitled to the banquet of Life.

My doctrine is ahimasa, Do no harm! And that towards all creatures on earth, and above all, to Man, in all his shapes, sexes, colors and creeds. Diversity — both biological and mental — is the very essence of True Evolution, the doctrine the ancient Atlanteans left us in the Four Castes of Mankind which they created in order to till the Four Continents.

But the story of the A-Bomb and the H-Bomb, even if it developed right under our eyes, is permeated with mysteries lies and falsehoods. I know that because I am a Nuclear Scientist by profession who partook directly in the Brazilian programs both open and covert. And, besides, I deeply researched the problem both from the Occult side and from the Historical one. And my sincere belief is that the A-Bomb was the result of an Alchemical procedure that can be traced back to Atlantis.

I realize this is unbelievable and that most people will deem it utter nonsense. But it is the Truth or, at least truth as I see it as best as I can. The very story of Nazism and Zionism is rooted in Atlantean traditions, as any wise Occultist certainly knows. The wars of the two are replicas of the War of Atlantis, the eternal battle of the Sons of Light versus the Sons of Darkness. This is an unending war that will only end come the Millennium. And this is the reason why I strive to bring it on with all my forces.

Jacques Bergier and jean Pawells in their fabulous Morning of the Magicians, tell the mysterious story of the primordials of the story of the A-Bomb. The two authors were orthodox Jews and cannot, hence, be deemed anti-Jewish or even anti-Zionist. Bergier was a member of the French resistance and participates actively in the research that would eventually end in the development of the A-Bomb by the Americans. The whole idea started originated within Bohr’s group in Copenhagen.

This group of eminent scientists was formed not only by Jews-Bohr himself being of Jewish extraction — but also by Germans such as Werner Heisenberg. But it also had Occult activities of which not all members partook, and which in all probably embodied activities to counteract the Nazism that was already rising in Germany.

No matter what, the fact is that the research that would ultimately lead to the A- and H- bombs originated there within that group of brilliant scientists. Jacques Bergier participated, as we just said in the early development of the research. One night he attends a secret seminar ministered by Fulcanelli, the mysterious Alchemist who is well-known among all students of the Art.

Fulcanelli talked not so much about the Alchemical secrets but sermonized on the terrible risks of the weapon the group was secretly attempting to develop, on how it had once destroyed the world, etc., etc.. Should we doubt Bergier’s words? Why? The second act of the drama for we skip the Nazi effort to develop the weapon and the espionage of the Allies on them — takes place under Roosevelt.

The Jewish refugees — great scientists like Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, Leo Szilard and many others who would later develop the theoretical and experimental base for the development — gathered around Einstein, who wrote the President on their behalf, telling the more or less the same thing that Fulcanelli earlier had.

Except that he warned that the Germans were developing it and that the only solution would be for the Allies to do it first, for otherwise the world was doomed. Despite the fact that, at the time, the Jewish émigrés were a suspect bunch in ethnocentric America, the President listened to them and the Manhattan Project was started. Its leader, Robert Oppenheimer, was another Jew, conversant with the Occult as were Einstein, Bohr, Fermi and indeed most, if not all heads of the Project, the biggest ever in modern times.

It is very strange that the President would embark on such a risky project at such a high post and at a time when his country’s resources were overtaxed by the war effort and the help of the other allies. The results — as essentially Alchemical and apparently impossible as those of Cold Fusion, at least at the times — were far from promising, and God only knows the enormity of the resources both human and financial that were spent in the effort that would ultimately prove disastrous and in fact unnecessary.

Anyhow, what we want to prove is not the inanity of the Manhattan Project, but its Alchemical primordials and its connection with Nazism and Zionism, as well as with other Occult movements that root directly in Atlantis. How could Fulcanelli, Einstein, Roosevelt and, above all, the Nazis and others know of the results and possibilities of nuclear devices far before the possibility of nuclear fission and fusion were dreamed of both in theory and in fact?

Scientists, though often clever are no prophets, and have no possibility to foresee the future, despite their brave attempts to do so. For instance, they are presently bewildered by Cold Fusion, and unable to theoretically explain the phenomenon or, far less still, whether it will become a reality or not.

As a matter of fact, it seems that Cold Fusion is fast becoming a reality, and several devices were demonstrated and apparently work as claimed. (Ref. 5). As the reference just given reports, Motorola has recently acquired the rights to a patent on one of these devices for an enormous sun. Why would the colossus invest in a machine that will not work?

To be sincere, we do not know whether the process of Cold Fusion indeed works. But we hope it does, for the benefit of Mankind. It is apparently impossible on theoretical grounds. But there is so much that we do not know concerning Nuclear Physics and Elementary Particles that it would be arrogant for anyone to say that it is indeed a physical impossibility.

Possibilities like the Tunnel Effect and the Pauli Exclusion Principle or the Principle of Indeterminacy may intervene and are not at all out of order. And these indeed are postulated principles that are ultimately “irrational” from a mechanicist point of view.

New times are dawning, and we must keep our eyes open to the new realities. Even if they are alternatives so unlikely as the Elixir of Life, the Panacea, Alchemy, and Free Energy. These are all traditional tenets that may all indeed ultimately be founded on actual fact. Who would believe Viagra a few years ago? the Atomic Bomb before it became a tragic reality? The Alchemical transmutation of mercury into gold, even if made by a super-duper machine?

We have finally set the stage that will allow us to discuss the “smoking gun” evidence that Atlantis indeed met its tragic end in an all-out Nuclear War. This evidence is the most unequivocal that anyone might demand, for it is empirically verifiable by means of physical measurements and calculations. We will not bother to enter in these mathematical details or their theoretical justification here, for these transcend our present scope.

The reader is invited to read the evidence provided in Ref. 4 by Christopher Dunn, and in the ample scientific literature on the subject. It concerns C¹⁴, the carbon isotope (radiocarbon) utilized in radioactive dating of organic-based or organic-containing material. Though the method is sometimes suspected by several archaeologists, it has recently been calibrated by dendrochronological methods and was thus freed of certain systematic errors that made it prone to great discrepancies, as discussed next.

The Reality of the Radiocarbon Anomaly

When I set out to write the present article, all I had was an idea, a wild guess that I wanted to test out more in detail. After all, I thought – as the dear reader probably will – that the idea of nuclear wars in the remote past of humankind was preposterous, and was no more than an amusing notion arising out of scientific fantasies.

As a professional nuclear scientist, one that had, inclusive worked directly in the field of Radiocarbon Dating, I had often noted the mysterious anomaly that occurs in the atmospheric content of that radioisotope, and the fact that the anomaly increases towards the past until it levels out at about 10,000 BP or so.

In fact, even though I have been working on the problem of Atlantis for almost 20 years now, it never occurred to me that the anomaly of C14 in the atmosphere could be linked to the problem of Atlantis, let alone of nuclear wars in its history. Of course, I was well aware that the nuclear activities of our present civilization have led to an anomalous increase of that radioisotope in our atmosphere by nearly 50% or so. But, how do you go about linking in your mind what is at best an amusing speculation to an ugly reality too hard to face directly?

I guess we are chosen somehow. What our elders called “vocation” in the times of my childhood. Though an atheist, thank God – one that in fact deeply envies those who obtained the gift of faith – I have been extremely glad of my “vocation” to be the prophet that was chosen to bring Atlantis back to life. Fate has strange designs in reserve for us. My journey as a guest for Atlantis has been, up to now, a joyous one

More or less like the Fool of the Tarot, I jumped into the chasm willingly. Even though realizing that the journey was to be rough most of the time – for I had to pace in jeopardy my career, as I in fact did to a great extent – I felt rewarded by the fact that I was to be instrumental to help to bring about the Millennium and the Golden Age back to Mankind.

But I never realized that my burden also entailed the obligation to discover and herald some terrible news to Mankind. For I do not want to be a prophet of Doom, another Cassandra fated to forever foretell disgrace and forever fated to be disbelieved and misunderstood by all. Suddenly, doubts have crept into my heart about whether we are viable as a species and if we will not go the way of the dinosaurs and the mammoths as we almost did at the end of the Pleistocene when so many magnificent creatures became utterly extinct.

To learn that this cataclysm may have been caused by ourselves, by our own utter folly is a burden as heavy as Atlas’. I always thought that Man was to become an Angel, the Paramatman and that my task was to help us out in turning this dream into a reality. And now this! This inescapable seeming truth that I am unable to disprove and dispel. The letters of that song – “whatever has been, will be! que sera, sera – keep coming back to my mind and causing me to cry. Can’t we escape the vicissitudes of Circular Time? Do we have to go back to the beginning forever and forever, destitute of progress and future, until we meet our collective end?

Well, the evidence is here. The “smoking gun”. Or, rather, the far larger Pillar of Fire and Smoke that attended the flight from Paradise, doomed by our own incorrigible folly. I hope that I am wrong and that the evidence that I present here is no more than an illusion, a mistake, an artifact, or, at least, an act of God, something that hit us from Outer Space or from the bottom of the earth without anybody’s fault.

But I am terribly afraid that this nightmare is for real. Read on, and think it over. And tell, please, after considering the whole of my research and all advanced wisdom of the ancients, that I am wrong. Or, that, if the nightmare, the apparition that is spooking my dreams is real, but that it is dead and buried forever, and forgotten. And that we will never, ever do it again, no matter what. And, if you want me to believe you, tell me also that we have dumped all nuclear weapons and, such, and that we are all ready to bring back the Golden Age.

Pushing the Calibration Curve Backwards

When it was finally realized that the basic assumption of radiocarbon dating made by Libby in 1947 – that the production of C14 in the atmosphere is constant in time for all epochs – the researchers turned to an alternative that is often used in Science: that of empirical calibration curves.

Simply stated, the recalibration of the C14 scale works as follows

1. A series of samples whose actual ages are well known by some other method is adopted as standards.
2. These samples have their radiocarbon ages carefully measured by the usual method.
3. A calibration curve of the radiocarbon age x actual age is carefully drawn with the above data and adopted as a standard.
4. When the date of any other sample is measured in the usual way, the radiocarbon age determined for it is entered in the curve, and the actual date is read from it.

One such calibration curve is shown in Fig. 1. When empirical recalibration of the C14 scale began to be used consistently, radiocarbon dating ceased to be a guess based on a risky hypothesis and became a scientifically rigorous method. So, the archaeologists – who were so justifiably skeptical of the method when it was first introduced and gave dates that were visibly wrong – can now rest assured that it was finally expunged of its major deficiency and is presently able to afford great help to the science of archaeology.

The idea of using empirical calibration curves is as old as Science itself. The problem lies in obtaining the standards. In fact, the first standards used in radiocarbon dating paradoxically were the very Epytological samples that it set out to measure in the first place. These samples often presented great discrepancies, which amounted to upwards of 800 years for objects of the pre-Dynastic period and the early dynasties.

But Egyptological dates are far from sure. Moreover, they only extend to about 3,000 BC or so, when Egypt entered the Dynastic period, and annals started to be recorded. The scientists then resorted to the two methods already described further above: tree-ring counting and varve analysis. In tree-ring counting, the yearly layers of trees are carefully counted, and a sample is taken from the desired layer. Its radiocarbon age is determined, and a calibration curve is constructed. Tree ages are limited. But it was found that the bristle-cone pine – a tree indigenous to the Southwestern United States – has living specimens with up to 4.900 years of age, being the oldest living organism.

It was later found out that the tree-ring method could be pushed back almost indefinitely by means of dead tree trunks preserved in bags, within volcanic deposits, etc.. the individual rings vary in shape and thickness from year to year. So, by matching overlapping sequences between living trees and dead ones, the scale can be extended to earlier epochs in time.

The radiocarbon scale has thus been extended – by means of trees such as the bristlecone pine of upwards of 13,000 years ago. Curiously enough, the calibration curve for ages larger than about 11,600 reaches a sort of saturation, and levels out, as shown in Fig. 1. What this means is extremely interesting and, indeed, rather sobering.

As can be seen in Table I, radiocarbon dates are consistently younger than actual (dendrochronological) years. This result is due to the fact that the atmospheric level of the radiocarbon isotope has not been constant in the past, as originally assumed by Willard Libby. Instead, the concentration of C14 in the atmosphere rises consistently, as we go back in time, as shown in Fig. 2 below, also taken from Ref. 8 (c)

In the curve of Fig. 2 we have superimposed the curve for the radioactive decay of C14 at the rate given by its half-life of 5730 years. As can be seen, the agreement is very good and confirms our hypothesis of a large injection of that radioisotope at about 11,600 BP followed by natural decay. It is clear that after the initial date of 9,600 BC, no more radiocarbon has been injected into the earth’s atmosphere beyond the one normally produced by cosmic rays.

The activity that produced ceased, whatever it may have been. In other words, the actual measurements of the C14 atmospheric level in the far past are consistent with an all-out nuclear war at about the end of the Pleistocene. This date, btw, also coincides with the one given by Plato for the end of Atlantis. As we already said further above, there may also be other possible explanations for the event recorded in the radioactive past of the earth.

This may be due to past changes in the rate of the cosmic rays hitting the earth or in the irradiation of our planet by intense neutron beams produced by events such as nearby supernova explosions or by a Black Hole’s ingestion of a nearby star. Both hypotheses seem far out to us, as we argued further above. So, it seems to us that the only viable hypothesis consistent with observed facts is that the cataclysmic end of the Pleistocene was caused by an all-out nuclear war in Atlantis, more or less along the lines reported by Plato and other mythographers.

Anyway, the hypothesis of an all-out nuclear War in the far past of the earth is the only hypothesis that is consistent both with scientific fact and with the Holy Traditions that come to us from this epoch. Such we ignore the forewarnings of our ancestors just because they are so unpleasant and so hard to accept?

The Mystery of Carbon 14

As we just said, the stage is now set for us to tackle the solid evidence we just discovered that Atlantis’ demise was indeed due to an all-out Nuclear War. But we must yet explain the riddle presented by radiocarbon dating, and that requires a little introduction. Like all elements on earth present on earth, material presents both stable and unstable isotopes. The unstable isotopes decay, via the emission of a particle such as a photon, a proton, an electron, a neutron or an alpha particle, into more stable forms.

If the particles emitted are charged, the new isotope thus formed belongs to a different element, as the process is indeed a sort of Alchemical transmutation. If the emitted particle is uncharged – for instance, a neutron, a photon or a neutrino – the resulting nuclide is a different isotope of the same element. In the case of carbon, the radioactive element is C14 (carbon 14), an isotope composed of 6 protons and 8 neutrons. Radiocarbon decays by the emission of a beta particle, that is, an electron of negative charge emitted by a radionuclide.

Since the emitted particle is charged negatively, the resulting isotope belongs to a different element, nitrogen, in the present case. The decay of radiocarbon has a half-life – the time it takes a given amount to decay a half – of 5730 years. Williard Libby made, in 1947, the remarkable discovery that all living organisms absorb radiocarbon from the atmosphere, either by direct absorption, as in photosynthesis, or by the ingestion of plants and other biological matters.

The radiocarbon contained in the atmosphere constantly decays with the above half-life of 5730 years. But it is constantly replenished by new fractions formed by the incidence of cosmic rays, which reacts with atmospheric nitrogen forming radiocarbon. Under ideal conditions, equilibrium is established, and the amount of radiocarbon in the atmosphere is constant at all times and places.

When an organism dies, it ceases receiving radiocarbon from the atmosphere. So, the amount existing within itself starts to decay with the usual half-life. After 5730 years, the contained amount and, hence, the radioactivity of a given sample will have decayed to half. After a further half-life, it will have again reduced by another half of the residue, that is one fourth of the original radioactivity, and so on.

So, the activity of a sample of a given mass of carbon will have a radioactivity that is a function of the amount of time that elapsed since its death. After 7 to 9 half-lives – that is, periods ranging from about 40 ky to 50 ky, the radioactivity of the sample becomes too small and difficult to measure, and the method ceases to be useful. Other techniques far more sensitive and far more precise such as mass spectroscopy, have been developed recently.

The method of radiocarbon dating is immensely important in archaeology and in archaeoanthropology, particularly when the objects to be dated are found outside their context, and hence cannot be dated by correlation. As we already said, it is often distrusted by archaeologists, who are generally resentful of intrusions of aliens in what they consider their own legitimate fend. But it has been and will become evermore useful in archaeology due to its many unique characteristics. One such is that radiocarbon dating affords absolute dates, dispensing the correlation with other layers or artifacts.

But, just like almost anything, Libby’s method has some deficiencies. One such is the possibility of contamination of the sample by some other organic material, say bacteria, fungi, worms, etc.. But fairly reliable methods of decontaminating the samples from this type of impurity have been developed recently that render the method essentially foolproof, except in very exceptional cases.

In recent epochs the equilibrium mentioned above that results from the equality between the production of radiocarbon and its radioactive decay has ceased to exist for two main reasons: one, the explosion of nuclear weapons and other radioactive discharges into the atmosphere, and two, the burning of fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal. The explosion of nuclear devices engenders neutrons that, just like those produced by the cosmic rays mentioned above, result in the transformation of atmospheric nitrogen into radiocarbon. ^[2]

The Anomaly of Radiocarbon Dating

At first, radiocarbon dating was applied rather dastardly, and a series of misadventures resulted. Most of them were due to sample contamination and related problems. But as these difficulties were resolved, a further paradox became patent. When the radiocarbon dates began to be compared with others determined by classical archaeological procedures, a substantial disagreement between the two different methods became manifest.

This discrepancy was systematic and was determined not to result from statistical or procedural errors in either of the two methods. Radiocarbon dates were consistently younger than those obtained through other methods by amounts that could exceed a couple of thousands of years for values above, 10.000 years.

For instance, an Egyptological sample reliably dated at about 3,000 BC, yielded dates about 800 years younger when dated by radiocarbon. The specialists did not find a satisfactory explanation for the problem but devised a way to bypass it. They made a so-called empirical recalibration of the radiocarbon scale based on the actual measurement of samples of a well-known date.

The first such samples were Egyptological, as mentioned above. A better alternative was discovered when it was realized that rather accurate absolute dates could be obtained by counting the annual tree rings in bristle-cone pines and other such species of trees. Other methods were also developed to recalibrate the radiocarbon scale. One such is afforded by the so-called varves deposited in lakes. Varves (or varved deposits) ^[3]

In Table I below we give some typical results of such recalibrations that have been done in the last few years (Ref. 8). Varves have the advantage of attaining far larger ages than tree ring counting. But some samples of these have been obtained recently that reach to about 12,000 years into the past, affording a very reliable recalibration for C14 ages.

The tabulated results indicate that by the date of 12,000 BP, radiocarbon was about 10% more abundant in the atmosphere than at today’s level. Note that these variations are relative (percentages) and correspond to changes in isotopic ratios due to some cause that affects this relationship rather than merely the amount of total CO₂ in the atmosphere, as in the Greenhouse Effect. A possible cause could have been a large burst of neutrons due to some mysterious cause, for example, a sudden burst of Cosmic rays. Several such possible causes will be discussed further below.

Most of these involve farfetched hypotheses such as miniature Black Holes strikes or irradiation by neutron beams generated by Black Holes when they gulp down entire stars or galaxies. The cause usually advanced by scientists is a reduction of the earth’s magnetic field due to some unknown cause.

In Table I we made the best fit of several intercomparisons made by different authors such as the ones quoted in Ref. 8 (c). These values show interesting behavior. They increase fairly regularly at first and then, when we reach a date of about 500 BP Dendro Years the Radiocarbon dates practically cease growing, and the deviations increase out of all proportion. The same behavior can be more visibly observed in Fig. 1 below, reproduced from the extensive study of Ref. 8 (a).

In Fig. 3 we marked drew the straight line that best fits the data. In it we can see that at about 11,500 or 11,600 Dendro Years the curve starts to fall off proportion, just as the data also did in Fig. 3. As we already said, this can only be the result of a sudden, massive injection of neutrons in earth’s atmosphere for some unknown reason.

The possible causes so far propounded by the research are as diverse and as farfetched as can be. One such would be a variation in the rate of cosmic rays hitting the earth. This could come about for several reasons. For instance, Black Holes emit a beam of fast neutrons while they are gulping down stars.

One such beam could sweep the earth, causing a massive disaster. Supernova explosions such as that of Vela X, held to have taken place at precisely the date obtained above (Ref. XXX [Toni Smith’s Home Page) can also cause similar neutron bursts. In fact, the supernova explosion of Vela X has been invoked as the cause of the cataclysm that caused the end of the Pleistocene which occurred at precisely the above date 11,600 BP.

Further causes of radiocarbon variations are the burning of fossil fuels and massive volcanic explosions. Both release large amounts of CO₂ into the atmosphere. Since both sources essentially have no radiocarbon, the relative composition of that isotope decreases in the atmosphere. In consequence, the (apparent) radiocarbon age is increased above the norm. But these two effects have an effect that is opposite to the one that is actually observed.

As we said above, a breakthrough in this obscure problem was made by Christopher Dunn (Ref. XXX). Writing in Atlantis Rising, Dunn proposes that a possible cause could be the reality of an ancient superior civilization. In his own words:

Is the high level of C14 in prehistoric artifacts evidence left behind by an industrial infrastructure that supported a high civilization 10,000 years ago?… They speak of an industry that, like us, would produce more C14 in the atmosphere than what is produced through natural causes.

That such an industry may have started to form almost 10,000 years BC gives a more reasonable time frame to support a premise that the devices that were used in the creation of these artifacts, along with the other accouterments associated with a high civilization had degraded to extinction… From this premise, evidence such as the granite artifacts found in Egypt, which demand that we include the possibility of such knowledge existing in prehistory, has been misinterpreted, disregarded, or overlooked.

Dunn is defending his thesis – brilliantly, by the way – that the ancient Egyptians had a superior technology – lasers included – that they used in cutting, carving and polishing the stones of their statues and monuments. While we are not as sure as Dunn himself apparently on this matter, is, we are obliged to admit that the ancient Egyptians indeed had secret technologies of a more usual character that they used for that end.

Among such, we count cutting abrasives such as emery, steel tools, and other such “accouterments” that they imported from Punt. And Punt was no other than Indonesia responding by its ancient name. ^[4] So, we see that Dunn came really close to the solution to the riddle of Atlantis without actually solving it, for he failed to look farther east than Egypt, as others also have.

It was from Punt – or, more exactly, from their primordial abode there, before the cataclysm – that the ancient brought along the superior technology that allowed them to work with surprising ease, the hardest stones such as diorite, basalt, and granite. But Punt – that is, Atlantis – sunk away under the seas, and the survivors were forced to move out, to Egypt and Upper India, which were spared, in comparison.

And, since the magnificent civilization of the Atlanteans had been disorganized, by the cataclysm, it could not produce anymore the sophisticated machines and devices required far more advanced machines. But their uncanny ability created more primitive tools and methods which were viable, and which used iron and emery, among others in order to pursue their ends.

Patience and endurance and resourcefulness – which the Egyptians never locked, then as now – had to substitute for the magnificent resources they had once possessed, in Atlantean times. Again, we have to disagree with Dunn in a matter of detail, but one of supreme importance. The excess neutrons that generated the extra C14 in earth’s atmosphere at that epoch did not arise in a continuous manner in the interval between 12,000 BP (10,000 BC) and 10,000 BP as he affirms, but in essence, a single burst centered at about 11,600 BP, the precise date of the demise of Atlantis.

As we argued above, in the context of Fig. 1, the calibration curve for radiocarbon ages abruptly changes slopes at about that date. Had the production of C14 been spread over the interval mentioned by Dunn, the curve would slope upwards linearly, departing from the lower date, which it obviously does not, as can be seen in Fig. 1. Anyhow, any civilization straddling the date of the end of the Pleistocene would have been utterly destroyed by the cataclysm that attended the end of the Ice Age (ref. 1).

So, one has to choose, was that civilization prior to the Flood (ante-diluvian), or did it arise after it, when the world had been reset back to the Stone Age? We have now reached the point where we feel we can deliver the coup de grace, the mercy blow. Atlantis’ population, though huge for the epoch – about 20 million people, according to my estimates – was nevertheless tiny by modern standards where the world beans the burden of fully 6 billion people.

Hence, Atlantis would not overtax the world’s resources, and not overly pollute the environment. Even if they were far ahead of our technologies they would tend to use clean fuels and clean vehicles, as their own fuels and clean vehicles, as their own traditions attest. So once more, Dunn’s argument about environmental pollution seems unfounded in actual facts to us.

We had to do a lot of soul-searching before we struck on what seems to be the “smoking gun” evidence demanded by some. Indeed, what a gun, and what a plume of smoke. The biggest ever. The Sacrificial Pyre itself is so often portrayed in Hindu mandalas [LINK TO SITE ON MT. MERU]

When we reviewed the possibilities for the cause of the C14 anomaly discussed further above, we were compelled to conclude, as the reader hopefully will – unless they know some important piece of data that we overlooked – that only a bombing of the Holy Mountain itself by means of nuclear artifacts could have caused the C14 anomaly. Volcanic eruptions per se actually tend to reduce atmospheric radiocarbon levels, rather than having the opposite effect. So, it was not purely this type of event that apparently caused the end of the Pleistocene as well as that of Atlantis.

Hitting by neutronic sources such as neutron beams emanating from Black Holes or from supernova explosions seems highly unlikely, if tenable at all. Black Holes have yet to be proven by factual examples and even by a more decent theory. Even if they existed, the probability of they ever striking the earth so recently in time is dismally small.

But, even if they did, the further odds of that place being the very capital of the Atlantean empire and the very site of the ferocious Krakatoa volcano is so small that it is difficult to imagine. The only possibility would be for it to be foreordained. By whom? Gods? Astronauts? Or, far more likely, by humans? ^[5]

For more reasons than one, we believe that human intervention is the only reasonable explanation for the mysterious C14 anomaly. The demise of Atlantis is in fact connected with the radiocarbon anomaly which, as we saw, occurred on the precise date advocated by Plato for that event. So is the one of the cataclysmic end of the Pleistocene, some 11,600 years ago, three rare coincidences in a row? Plus several others can be seen on Tony Smith’s Page (Ref. XXX) and elsewhere, in my papers.

Now, suppose, as we hypothesized above, that a nuclear device was indeed emplaced in the capital city of Atlantis and detonated, triggering the explosion of its Holy Mountain, the Krakatoa volcano. Of course, the Atlanteans themselves would not commit collective suicide, so they have to be dismissed. The traditions reported by Plato and others report that the “Greeks” did it or, also, that Zeus, who impersons their paideuma punished the Atlanteans with his mighty thunderbolt, which is nothing else than the vajra of Hindu traditions or the Agni Astra that we discussed further above.

So, indeed, the terrible dirty thick seems to have been perpetrated by these enemies of the Atlanteans, who actually defeated them, according to Plato’s report. Would not that terrible deed be considered a most grievous sin by any standards and in any religion or international tribunal? The expression “Greek present” may well embody a dim recollection of the ignoble action. ^[6]

In fact, the expression “Greek gift” originated from the Trojan Horse that the Greeks treacherously introduced in Troy on the occasion of their siege of the town of Hektor, the “tamer of horses” whom they were unable to tame. The full story cannot be told here, for it involves secrets that are not mine to disclose. Suffice it to say that Troia (or Illion) is just another of the many names that the ancient bards used to disguise the true identity of Atlantis.

And the White Mare – which the Greeks introduced furtively in the doomed city, and which led to its destruction by Fire and Water, precisely as for Atlantis – is indeed no other than the Vadava-Mukha, the Fiery Submarine Mare that is so often equated with the Fire of Doomsday. Am I inventing things and putting words in the mouths of the ancient bards which they never uttered? No way! I would never joke on such a serious matter as this. Only the jackasses play with holy things. For they are true, and will ultimately be disclosed by sages far wiser in the ancient arcane than me.

The tradition of the “dirty trick” played by the junior brother on the elder is a recurrent myth that we find at all places and at all times. But the story ultimately, derives from the Rig Veda, from the duel of Indra and Vritra, which we already commented on above. As usual, the whole story is never told, and what is disclosed is done under the shape of allegories extremely hard to decode.

In some mysterious way, Indra penetrates the giant body of Vritra which he cleaves open with his thunderbolt, the vajra. The monster is drained of all his fiery “blood”, precisely as we already discussed above. Other myths suggest that Vritra used some ruse, some dirty trick to accomplish his deed, precisely as the Greeks did in the case of Troy. It is clear to all who are conversant with the interpretation of myths that the two legends pertain to one and the same event, which they record in the allegoric form. And that event – the emplacement of the vajra, the Agni Astra inside the belly of the monster in order to cause it to burst open – can be no other than the real event we are discussing. Otherwise, how could so many uncanny coincidences be happening between tradition and actual fact?

Indra was known in India as “Mountain Render”, because of the mountain of the Panis which he burst open, killing his opponents by the millions. Idle talk? I wish it were, sincerely. But, how can one reject reality when it is unfolding before your eyes? Let us quote a few lines of the Vedic hymn we are discussing in order to illustrate our words with epigraphical, traditional evidence. We can warn the reader that the Rig Veda was not intended to be read lightly. It has to be meditated, word by word, and prayed if possible by heart before it starts to penetrate our brains more or less like Kundalini rising from the base of our spine. So, I end this work with the opening words of the hymn, which I make my own.

For all ends are beginnings and all beginnings, ends, as our wise ancestors learnt long, long ago:

Let me now sing the heroic deeds of Indra,

The first which the Tunderbolt-wielder ever performed.

He killed the Dragon and pierced an opening for Soma,

He split open the bellies of the mountains…

The waters [of the sea] flowed over Vritra’s hideout,

Sunk down in the waters into the long darkness…

When Indra killed Vritra he split open the way,

The outlet for the Soma which had been closed till then.

Useless were the thunder, fog, sparks and hail,

That Vritra scattered about when he, the Dragon,

Fought Indra, the Hero, who remained victorious forever.

What avenger of the Dragon did you see, Indra?

That filled your heart with fear when you killed him?

You fled like an eagle frightened away,

Crossing the 99 rivers, the realms of earth and sky.

Indra, the Thunderbolt-Wielder is the king

Of all that moves above and all that rest,

Over the tame and the horned, over men yow rule,

All this you encircle like a run the spokes.

 

The Decay Rate of C14 in the Atmosphere

Before we start discussing this topic, let us attempt to explain the behavior of the decay of the excess C14 illustrated in Fig. 2. We remark that this excess is apparently being removed from the atmosphere at a rate faster than the normal decay of that radioisotope. Given the fact that no process known so far can accelerate this rate of decay, the only explanation available to us is that it is either being recycled in some sink such as the oceans or, conversely, that older CO₂ – for instance, coming from volcanoes and such sources – is being injected in earth’s atmosphere.

If excess C14 is somehow injected into the earth’s atmosphere, it readily combines with atmospheric oxygen to become CO₂. The exchange of this gas with the ocean – affected both by adsorption and by plankton photosynthesis – takes about 1,000 years or so to be completed. Hence, this process could readily account for the effective removal of excess C14 from the atmosphere, by mixing with the older CO₂ dissolved in seawater or contained in plankton.

Terrestrial plants and terrestrial soils are other possible sinks of atmospheric CO₂ by an analogous process. As a matter of fact, scientists are presently at a loss to discover the actual sinks of excess CO₂ injected in the atmosphere by Man’s activities, and great research projects are presently being implemented in order to track down this important Greenhouse Effect gas.

The end of the Pleistocene was also attended by a volcanic paroxysm caused by the strains and stresses caused on the earth’s crust and oceanic floors by the shift of the glacier meltwaters from the continents into the oceanic beds. The CO₂ emitted by volcanoes is extremely old, and hence very poor in the radioactive isotope C14, which died out in the earth’s interior or more likely, only forms in the atmosphere as the result of bombardment by mentions generated by cosmic rays or by the detonation of nuclear devices.

So, there is indeed no reason to be puzzled by the behavior of C14 displayed in Fig. 2, which is indeed what is to be expected in practice for a large injection of C14 sometime near 11,600 BP or so, and which ceased for later epochs.

Possible Causes for the Observed Injection of Excess C14

The only problem left for us is to explain the actual cause of the observed C14 excess injected at the epoch of the cataclysmic end of the Pleistocene Ice Age. As usual, all sorts of possible causes have been proposed in the scientific literature. Some, and indeed most of these were rather farfetched and readily earned fame in the media and among sensationalist writers who earn a living alarming the public.

Among these, we have the ones we already mentioned above, which include:

1. Variations in earth’s magnetic field.
2. Nearby supernova explosions.
3. Black Holes showering us with neutron beams
4. The passage of the Solar System within Plasura Nebulas.
5. Variations in the Solar Output and the Solar Wind.
6. The passage of miniature black holes with the earth.

Scientists generally reject all these but the first one, which is apparently well-attested in practice. Nearby supernova explosions so near us as to cause a major impact, and so near in time as 11,600 years ago would be easy to detect astronomically. And such is apparently not the case at all. The Supernova explosion in Vela X which we already mentioned and which took place on the correct date occurred too far away to cause any possible harm to life on earth or, far less, to cause the brutal cataclysm actually attested by the geologic record.

So, despite the attractiveness of this proposition, we must quest other more plausible causes. Neutron beams theoretically generated when Black Holes gulp down stars or galaxies are even more fascinating than Supernova explosions. Alas, the very reality of Black Holes is far from proven both theoretically and in actual fact. To explain the unknown with the unknown is not a good philosophical procedure. Anyhow, even if real, Black Holes close enough to hit us with their radiation have yet to be found by our potent telescopes.

The same is true of miniature Black Holes. We are uncertain of the existence of the large ones and the baby Black Holes are even less likely than their great grand-daddies. Plasma nebulas – for instance within the arms of the Milky Way – may be able to account for the even larger cataclysm that afflicted the earth in the far past, say 100 million years ago or so.

But, again the hypothesis of such a happening near the end of the Pleistocene would be easy to detect astronomically. That no such nebula is visible at the expected distance from the Solar System decidedly rules out this hypothesis, at least in our view.

Variations of the Solar output are likewise unlikely. They would leave a series of imprints on the earth and the other planets that are not observed in practice. So, such variations – beyond the well-known, minor ones such as the 11-year solar spot cycle – are generally dismissed by specialists. So, we are left with the sole alternative currently admitted by the scientist who specializes in the matter, the variations of earth’s magnetic field. And, besides that, we also have the alternative that we are presently proposing: that of an all-out nuclear war in Atlantis.

So, what if the only alternative so far accepted by the academic community fails to hold itself up? Will we be compelled into accepting as true the Atlantean War of gods and devils proposed by Plato and others? It seems that such is the case to believe the compelling evidence presented in the vast bibliography quoted further below, which we thoroughly studied in order to attempt to clarify this obscure matter.

Anyway, as we already said above, the hypothesis of nuclear war in Atlantis seems to be the only one able to account both for the empirical and the theoretical evidence available, as well as for the traditional one that came down to us from contemporary reports.

Several facts belabor against the hypothesis of a large decrease in earth’s magnetic field leading to an increase of cosmic rays and, in turn, of the production of an excess of atmospheric C14 due to the increase of the fast neutrons produced by their interaction with earth’s atmosphere. Among these, the main ones are:

• 1) The shifts of the earth’s magnetic field attested in the past geological record have never led to the mass extinctions actually often observed to have occurred over geologic time. Hence, it is unreasonable to believe that those of the end of the Pleistocene would behave any differently.
• 2) There is ample evidence of the fact that the mass extinctions that occurred at the P/H (Pleistocene / Holocene) boundary were of a mechanical nature rather than of a radioactive one. It is not easy to see how an increase in cosmic ray production – a very minor problem, in comparison – even by several-fold would result not only in the brutal extinctions actually observed, but also in glacier melting, volcanic paroxysm, tsunamis, marine extinctions, mountain lifting, temperature rise, and several other effects that are amply attested in the geological records of the epoch and have to be explained by whatever cause invoked to explain the mass extinctions.
• 3) But the most serious objection against the hypothesis of a reduction of earth’s magnetic field as the cause of the increase of atmospheric C14 is due to a very recent find that casts serious doubt on the assumption. A recently developed technique that allows the direct dating of samples by dendrochronology and, at the same time, the measurement of both the C14 contents of the sample and the strength of earth’s magnetic has reached the conclusion that no such variations occurred at all.

The method consists in using samples taken from trees buried in bogs and, at the same time, determining the intensity and the direction of the magnetic field of the earth by means of the ferromagnetic particles in the silt deposited together with the samples. With due care, this method has been extended to 12 thousand years or more into the past. And the results are unequivocal: no appreciable changes in earth’s magnetic field over that span of time.

In the list of references below, we include some references to the articles reporting these interesting results. They are the more remarkable because a flip of the earth’s magnetic field had been reported earlier by some researchers who dubbed it the Gotheburg Reversal. Apparently, the reversal these researchers observed was an artifact of nature of the type postulated by F. Néel, and actually observed in practice. (Ref. 12). The phenomenon is known as self-inversion and was first proposed theoretically by the great French scientist, but was later discovered to occur in geology, under certain special conditions.

The proponents of radiation as the actual cause of the mass extinctions such as that of the P/H transition often base themselves on the fact that plants tend to survive far better than animals in the impact of such a cataclysm. (Ref. 13). This survival they attribute to the fact that vegetals are far more resistant than animals to large doses of radiation that occur during the reversals of the earth’s magnetic field or when supernovas explode too near the earth. While this is true in fact, we believe that the true reason lies elsewhere. In fact, it seems that plants are far better equipped than animals under cataclysmic conditions. Imagine a mechanical cataclysm such as a giant tsunami or a hurricane.

Plants and animals will both be destroyed. But the plants will revive later from the scattered seeds and spores, whereas the animals will not. The same thing happens if, for instance, the skies go dark – say by a thick cloud of smoke or dust. Both plants and animals will eventually starve. But the seeds and spores of most plant species will lay dormant for years until proper conditions again obtain for them to germinate.

The idea that mass extinctions can occur when the earth’s magnetic field flips and reverses were first proposed by Uffen in 1963 (Ref. 13). During the time that this field is reversing it has to pass through zero, even if for a brief interval of time. Now, the cosmic rays, as well as the charged particles emitted by the sun (Solar wind) and stored in the van Allen belt are normally unable to strike the earth’s magnetic field which acts as a sort of shield.

This deflection is due to the so-called Lorentz Force, which acts over the charged particles, causing them to deflect sideways, away from the earth. The magnetic field inversion is known to occur at intervals of about 1 million years. They occur within about 1 thousand years, and the reversal lasts for, say 100 thousand years on average. These reversions become recorded in the magnetism of the volcanic lavas that are deposited during the episode.

While these rocks are molten, the magnetic particles contained in them align themselves with the magnetic field of the earth. When the rock cools and hardens, they retain that alignment for all times afterward. By studying these rocks and by dating them via radioactive methods or others, scientists are able to determine the dates and durations of these inversions.

Marine sediments are also able to record magnetic field directions by means of the magnetic particles contained in the dust deposited along with them. In fact, they are often more convenient than volcanic lavas, for they are easier to obtain and measure.

In fact, the effect of the earth’s magnetic field on the flux of cosmic rays hitting the earth is rather small in practice. In passing from the poles – where the effect of the field is null – to the equator, where it is maximum, the flux of cosmic rays increases by only about 10% or less from a value of 23 mrad/ year to about 25 mrad/ year.

This is also the increase to be expected during the brief interval of about 1 century or less where the field remains essentially at a null value. This amount of radiation is well within the MPD (Maximum Permissible Dose) for humans, which is about 1000 mrad/ year for the public in general. As is clear, the effect under discussion can only have a very minor effect on life in general, both animal and vegetal.

Moreover, the increase in C14 levels is also minor, as the actual increase only lasts for a very short period of time when compared to the half-life of C14 of 5,730 years. We can estimate roughly that this increase will be less than 10 x 100/5730 % = 0,17 or so far each flip or twice that for both (back and forth). So, the conclusion is that variations or inversions of the earth’s magnetic field have a minor impact on both life and the C14 contents of the atmosphere (14).

Solar flares can attain a far larger peak value. But they only last a few hours, and their global effect is again negligible. The cycle of sunspots – which recurs at intervals of 11 years – has a larger average value than either of the above. But it is also relatively short-lived, and hence negligible for the problem under discussion. Van Allen mentioned posing a threat when the earth’s magnetic is absent. But this is not a fact. They are composed of particles of very low energy, that are totally unable to cross earth’s atmosphere.

Supernova explosions or Black Hole irradiation are definite possibilities that may alter geological times. But these objects move comparatively slowly when we take light-years for a standard. Typical speeds of stellar objects are about 30 km/sec or so. Hence, in the 11,600 years that elapsed since the end of the Pleistocene, these objects would be at a distance of (30/300,000) x 11,600 = 1,2 light-years. Of course, no such objects are visible at such a short distance from the earth. Hence, though fascinating, at first sight, such hypotheses do not correspond to the reality of observed astronomical facts, and must be, hence, summarily discarded, at least insofar as the end of the Pleistocene is concerned.

Moreover, even if an increase in radioactivity could have somehow caused the mass extinctions of the Pleistocene or other era transitions it is extremely difficult to see how they would lead to the sudden temperature rise that then occurred. This transition was extremely sudden, probably under a century or so.

It is true that Ice Age and its causation are amongst the most obscure of all phenomena that periodically occur on the earth. Dozens of theories have been proposed, only to be almost unanimously rejected. The only one that has somewhat withstood the impact of time is that of Milutin Milankovitch, the so-called “astronomical theory”.

It supposes that Ices Ages have both their onset and their termination dictated by insolation, that is, the amount of sunlight actually reaching the earth. The amount of the insolation changes very slightly as the result of three long-range effects: the Precision of the Equinoxes (26,000 years), and the variations of the ellipticity of earth’s librations (41,000 years).

But the amount of change is so minute that we fail to see how it would indeed lead to major fluctuations in the earth’s climate. We believe that Life actually controls the earth’s climate by means of the Greenhouse Effect. So, for Slow changes, it has time to react and adapt, adjusting the temperature back to the optimum like a sort of optimum-seeking mechanism.

However, if the perturbations are sudden – a meteoritic impact of major proportions, a huge volcanic explosion, or, perhaps, an all-out nuclear war – Life has no chance to develop a counteracting compensation, and something gives. More or less like an electronic flipflop or a mechanic scale equipoised at balance. And once it goes haywire, in a thermal runaway, it only stops when it reaches the extremes, either an Ice Age or a Hot Age.

We know this may sound brutal to some. But it is apparently the reality of facts. At least, it is in the image that the wise ancients made of Mother Earth, and which they feared to throw into a rage due to the terrible consequences. But the present paper is not the proper arena to treat this matter, which is left for a better opportunity. I am no moralist. But, if the end of the Pleistocene – the Age of Atlantis – was in fact caused by an all-out nuclear war where one of the parties triggered the explosion of Mt. Atlas, the volcano of Atlantis, by means of an atomic device it is hard to evade the conclusion that the two sides got what they deserved by their execrable acts.

This sin, this terrible sin, was precisely what the Hindus called adharma, the Greeks harmartia and the French call demesure. It may well have been the “pride” of Lucifer and the Original Sin all in one. An absolute disregard for Nature and for Life, and absurd genocide of incomparable proportions. Even genocides such as those that attended the conquest of the Americas, the Cathar Crusade, or the Jewish Holocaust wane in comparison, like the stars before the sun.

However, we are compelled to face the facts. And, what is even worse, we may well be on the verge of commuting this nefarious crime against humanity and Nature once more. The stage is set for another atomic arms race. And, as we already said, a single nuclear device of relatively modest proportions may well do in the Whole World, setting us back to the Stone Ages as was apparently the case with the Atlantean War.

There is yet a point that came back to mind – for all knowledge is indeed remembrance, just as Plato once said in his memorable dialogues. The mandalas that endlessly portray Mt. Meru – the Mountains of Paradise that is no other than Mt. Atlas – both in India and elsewhere invariably have a feature that I have often discussed elsewhere, somewhat wrongly, I now realize.

My mistake concerns the so-called “Secret of the Golden Flower” to use a name introduced by R. Wilhelm and C. Jung in their famous book about the Golden Lotus that grows atop Mt. Meru, like a giant tree. It is not indeed a flower, or a tree, or a palm tree stem, but a mushroom, an Atomic Mushroom which we, unfortunately, know so well. The Golden Flower is no invention of mine, of Jung, or even of Wilhelm, the famous Sinologist. Wilhelm merely translated the book from Chinese. This text is actually an extremely ancient initiation poem of Tantric-Taoist extraction.

The Mystery of the Golden Flower is deeply poignant. It is quaint and oniric, and its interpretation – which I did in detail elsewhere – was perhaps the work that touched me the deepest when I discovered the terrible secret of the Golden Flower and its identity with an “atomic mushroom”. But I could not bring myself to think that the Golden Flower – the gigantic explosion that destroyed Paradise and left it utterly empty and terribly dark, except for that shiny beauty of incomparable malevolence – could ever have been caused by man’s own wantonness.

So, I presumed that the Flower – the same one that we see everywhere, the smelly Lotus at the nose of Nephertem – was indeed the pillar of fire and smoke that resulted from the volcanic explosion of Mt. Atlas, the Holy Mountain of Paradise. But no, now I see that its explosion – so widely commemorated in all sorts of symbols and rituals everywhere – was indeed atomic and hence could only have been caused by Man himself.

Or rather, by devils, for such is the shape we assume in war. No way out! No escape for us. No way to forget that we did it once and are probably bound to do it all over again every time we reach the required technological level. And what for would we all develop nuclear devices except to use them always in “self-defense” and always “to spare precious lives”?

I am sorry if I underestimated Man’s perversity and figured out a natural cause, an act of God when the deed was purely our own fault. It is perhaps for that cause that the Secret of the Golden Flower is never told directly, for it is too terrible and too real for us all to face front on, for it burns more than the sun.

1. The reality is appalling. A typical PWR reactor contains something like 10 billion curies of deadly radioisotopes, either functioning or stopped, for radioactivity takes centuries to die out sufficiently. The Maximum Permissible Concentrations in the atmosphere, water, or foodstuffs are of the order of a few microcuries only, in order to keep below the permissible doses of radioactivity to our organisms. Hence, if the above-mentioned burden is evenly distributed over the whole earth it results in something like 2 curies per person. This is about 1 million times the Maximum Permissible Concentration commented on above. Of course, the winds and the rains, rivers and oceanic currents would insure that we all receive our due share of the suicidal poison. And neither would the radioisotopes be lost away, by some natural means. Radioisotopes, like many other pollutants, tend to concentrate on living organisms, in proportions that increase as you ascend in the ecological food claim. Being on top, we would naturally end up getting the benefit of the whole process. ↑
2. The mathematically minded reader that is interested in the actual processes can study them in the standard textbooks on the subject. The actual reactions are rather simple. Cosmic rays, like nuclear devices, engender neutrons that react with atmospheric nitrogen via the (n, p) reaction:₇N¹⁴ + n → ₆C¹⁴ + pThe proton thus emitted readily captures an electron and becomes a normal hydrogen atom. And the ₆C¹⁴ is the usual radiocarbon isotope of atomic number 6 and atomic mass 14. The radiocarbon atom is for all practical purposes identical to the normal ones (₆C¹⁴) and readily combines with other carbons and oxygen atoms to form atmospheric CO₂. ↑
3. The word varve derives from the Swedish vara, meaning “wave”, that is, something that is periodically repeated. Varves form in lakes and bogs as the water level periodically rise and fall to the rhythm of the season. The yearly layers can sometimes be picked out and counted, to yield the date of its formation. An organic sample contained in the varve such as a leaf or a root is radiocarbon dated, and the two results are compared to obtain the actual recalibration curve. ↑
4. The name Punt means nothing in Egyptian because it is indeed Dravida. In that tongue, the name means “bridge”, “isthmus”, or “connecting strip”. The Sanskrit equivalent is Bandha, meaning precisely the same thing. The name is preserved even today in that of the Banda Sea and of the Bantam province, in Java. Bandha (or Setu Bandha) is the name of the Malay Peninsula in the Ramayana, the very site of Lanka. ↑
5. These probabilities are so utterly small that their calculation is a sheer waste of time. Consider first the second one just mentioned. The earth has an area of about 500 million km². An object of say, 0,5 km² would have a chance of (0,5/500) x 10 ^–6 = 10^-9 (1 in a billion) of hitting a specified spot. The probability for the neutron beam of a Black Hole or a supernova to hit us with a profusion of neutrons sufficient to cause the so-called Quaternary Extinctions that attended the end of the Pleistocene is by far smaller. But, even if we admit the reality of such farfetched explanations they are a priori probability is probably well under 10^-40 when we take into consideration the typical distance of such objects in regards to the earth. ↑

We note, before someone accuses us of being “anti-Greek”, that the word “Greek” in Plato and in Homer means the Yavanas (Iafones, in Homer), that is, the white races in general and not indeed the people that later occupied the Greek islands in the Mediterranean. Our objective here, as everywhere, is to reestablish truth, which has been suppressed for so long, perhaps because our deed was so terrible that we did not dare face up to it. I would love to be proved wrong, at least in this, for I too am white and have inherited the blame for the Original Sin that our ancestors committed. ↑
